San Diego RV Resort, La Mesa, California
Ken pulled the muscles in his back this past week while at the driving range (that darn golf!!) so we've kept a low profile so he could "heal". We did manage a day trip to Torrey Pines and La Jolla to see the sights.
Torrey Pines is yet another California golf course on the Pacific coastline. It's a public course which makes it a little less impressive "amenity-wise" than Pelican Hill.
However, we walked up to the first tee and remember that this is where Walt Scano got his hole in one!!! (Not the first hole, tho...that's a par 5).
You sure can't beat the views on these courses.
We left Torrey Pines after a visit to the pro shop (of course) and found our way to La Jolla. For those of you not from California, that is pronounced "la hoya"; however, our little GPS lady pronounces it "lay jolla".
After lunch and a lot of driving around, we finally found a parking space and took a walk along the beach south of La Jolla Cove (there were NO parking spaces at the Cove). I took off my shoes and had a tough time walking as I would sink in the sand almost to my ankles!
The sandstone cliffs are so smooth...shaped from years and years of ocean storms and surf. The beach is a popular place for diving, kayaking or just enjoying the surf.
There are caves and little niches all along the shoreline.
We saw some sea lions and of course many varieties of sea birds. The weather was beautiful and the water sooo clear (and cold). (Jake, this is where I picked up the sea glass that I will be sending to you!)
This will probably be our last view of the Pacific Coast this trip. Although it is all quite beautiful, the Oregon coastline is by far the most magnificent.
We shared a couple of meals with our good friends, Dick and Cescia Derderian from Hopedale. It was fun catching up. We didn't notice the writing on the wall in this picture until we downloaded it the next day. You don't suppose they sat us there on purpose!? Anyway, it was really great seeing them. It's one thing to visit family as we travel, but to "run into" friends from home is really cool.
We also got to meet their grandkids: here we have granddaughter Kayla (2-1/2) and the triplets, born June 23rd: Dick holding their granddaughter, Dylan, and Cescia holding grandsons Logan and Luke. Cescia and Dick are spending more and more time out here in San Diego than back in Hopedale. Now you know why!!
You will note out departure day has been moved up. As you know from previous blogs, the weather the first couple of weeks we were here was a bit chilly. It has warmed up nicely and we have been able to sit outside and enjoy our glass of wine in the evenings, but we have to yell at each other to be heard over the traffic noise from "the 8". It finally got to me!! So, I've found a golf and rv resort between here and Yuma (our next scheduled stop) and we're leaving tomorrow for a couple of days of "quiet" and golf. As much as we enjoyed the cleanliness and amenities here, we would never return to this campground because of its location.
We have had a wonderful time here in San Diego...our visit with Sarah and all the sightseeing; spending Christmas, football playoffs, golf and dinner with family Evy, Jay, Jan, Jim, Jeff, Suzie and Stan; and catching up with old friends, Cescia and Dick, and meeting the new members of their family. Our next stop at Rio Bend Golf and RV Resort, is still in California (El Centro), but we are leaving the California Coast and beginning our journey eastward and back home!!
