Key Largo, Florida

January 30 - February 1, 2010

Calusa Campground
Key Largo, Florida

We took a one hour, 45-mile trip from the Middle Keys back to the Upper Keys to join Susan and Bob for a couple of days. This picture of the coach was taken from the canal in front of our site while we were kayaking.

Can't say I'm a great fan of the campground but, as promised, the kayaking is superb. Almost as soon as we arrived, we took the yaks out for a cruise through the canals and out into Buttonwood Bay and met up with quite a few manatees. It was a bit sad though when the first one we saw was being hauled out belly-up by rangers. Even though the weather has warmed up a bit, the fish, turtles and manatees are still suffering from the cold spell.

Earlier this week Ken became an iguana non-virgin...today he has achieved the same status with manatees. What a sight! I think the manatee must have mistaken Ken's kayak for its mother! He (she?) just circled around Ken, lifting its head out of the water wanting to be pet. At one time he even started to roll over to get a tummy-scratch. In this picture, Ken is petting the manatee's tail.

It was pretty amazing. Ken was delighted and he'll never forget the experience.

Can you imagine the feeling of having one of these gentle giants coming up beside you when you're in a kayak that doesn't take that much to tip?

I can honestly say that all we have done these past two days is eat, kayak, eat, visit a nearby flea market, eat, and, did I say, eat!? We had a great breakfast at Henrrietta's in Key Largo and our last night here we traveled 20 miles west for dinner at Islamorada Fish Co. (I'm beginning to think all restaurants on the Keys contain either the words "Island" or Fish Co." in them. I don't know how to keep track of them all!)

After dinner we strolled around outside listening to a one-man reggae band and enjoyed the cool breezes!

Then in to the World Wide Sportsman (kind of like your Bass Outfitters) to poke around and visit their indoor acquarium. Very interesting evening, which we topped off with a very large ice cream at Dairy Queen. With Sarah coming this week, I'm sure we'll be out for meals a lot, but I swear I will start my diet again next week!!!!

We, along with Susan and Bob, leave here tomorrow for the 95+ mile drive to Key West where we'll meet up with Greg and Marilyn and pick up Sarah on Wednesday. Really looking forward to seeing her.
