March 14 - 17, 2008
I should have had Ken take a picture of the other side of the motorcoach...to show our new, very expensive slide toppers and awnings. Just because we're not homeowners anymore doesn't mean we don't have the "maintenance" issues associated with owning a home. The bad news and the good news: the day we arrived, we're putting out our slides and Ken hears this gigantic "rippppppp" and, sure enough, our canvas slide over the large, front slide rips, almost to shreds! The good news: we're at a rally where you can have those problems taken care of almost immediately, as long as you have a checkbook with you!!!
(This is the picture for the insurance adjuster...hopefully we'll recoop some of the money spent!!)
For those of you unfamiliar with rv'ing, you will note in most of our pictures of the motorhome, the antenna is up. We use the antenna to get local channels (for weather and local news) and use the dish for our DirecTV reception. However, at the rally, we were "dry" camping. There were no electric, water or sewer hookups. We relied on our holding tanks and generator to keep us going for the few days that we were there. The generator runs on diesel fuel, about one hour of use for one gallon of diesel. The last fill-up of our 100 gallon fuel tank cost us $3.69/gallon. It is now $4.01/gallon (for those of you who are not math geniuses, that means it would now cost us $401.00 to "fill 'er up")!!!
Now, we're attending a rally where they "show off" and try to get you to buy their new 2008 and 2009 models...some of them absolutely gorgeous. Then there is this 10,000 square foot building full of "new and innovative" ideas for the rv'ing way of life. Needless to say we walked away with lighter wallets (however, we didn't find that "exact new motorhome" we've been thinking about).
We really had a good time, but left today (a day early). We had spent all we could afford (especially after replacing two awnings...I didn't want the smaller slide to look different from the bigger one!!!) and we really wanted to beat the "crowds" leaving the next day.
We do manage to see some spectacular sunrises. Maybe we don't stay up long enough to get the sunsets!!
This does appear to be tornado country though. I already told you about the tornados that hit north of us on our trip to Cordele. While at the Rally, two tornados hit and did quite a bit of damage in Atlanta, north of Perry. Luckily, with little TV, I didn't know about it ahead of time and had no reason to worry!!!
We're now again heading south...with our next destination Lakepoint RV and Golf Resort in Eufaula, Alabama (just over the border). We're expecting a week of golf and kayaking and hopefully some good weather.
