Veterans Memorial State Park, Cordele, Georgia

March 7 - 14, 2008

This trip to Veterans Memorial State Park is all about the park. We were in Americus, right next door, last fall when we did the tourist-thing: visiting Ken's old home town of Albany and one of our favorite day trips to Andersonville. We're attending the Rally in Perry, Georgia beginning on Friday and began our trip north last week. The trip itself was quite exciting...stopping here and there in order to avoid the tornados going through northern Florida. Needless to say I was a bit nervous. Hurricanes I understand...tornados I would rather avoid (especially in a motorcoach)!

The first day here was cold and rainy. The high temperature was 51 degrees...the same as Falmouth that day. We were really ready to go back to Florida. It's amazing how quickly your blood thins in the warmer weather.

We had a wonderful week at this beautiful state park, played golf at the Veterans Memorial Golf Course and kayaked on Lake Blackshear with all its little coves. Our site is right on the water and it's huge. The one problem is no sewer. A week is a bit too long to go without emptying the gray tank. So, we've learned to plan state park stays (as most don't have sewer) for no more than 5 days!!!

This is the view of our site from our kayaks on Lake Blackshear.

One activity here at the park is the radio-controlled airplane operators who come to the open field to fly their planes. Ken enjoyed going down to watch them and, again, got the bug. We had left his helicopter at home thinking there just wasn't enough room for it. We were referred to a hobby shop in Americus and went to "look"...of course, ended up buying a new helicopter. (I guess we'll store it in the car along with all the other expensive toys!) We thought we had been given some bum information though going to the hobby shop. We were traveling through rolling farms and some lovely Georgia mansions and all of a sudden there it was, located behind a house in a building with about 1000 sq. ft. of radio-controlled airplanes and helicopters right next to a field to fly them which was next to a field for rvs. The people there were so friendly...Ken was ready to retire here and join the club!!

We'll miss our sunrises on the lake.

We leave here tomorrow along with the Airstream Trailer Club to go to The Rally in Perry, Georgia! I can just imagine what the line to the dump station will look like!!! This is our first BIG rally and I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like. Will let you know!
