Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

November 8 - December 9, 2010

Lakewood Camping Resort
Myrtle Beach, SC

First off...we did NOT win any SC lottery...we purchased $24 worth of tickets and won $10.  However, we're here and we're happy...........

You may recognize this picture...we are one street over from the site we were on last year, just a street and a dune away from the lovely white beaches of South Carolina.  (However, one difference....there's no spare tire on the back of the Jeep!!)  While this park doesn't have the beauty of Willow Tree, it does have the ocean and that can be a big draw!  But, last week there was a horse rally here and I think it's going to take a couple more days for the "effects" to wear away!  I have to say, I don't "smell" the ocean here as we do on Cape Cod; that salty smell that I love so much seems to be missing. (Hope it's not because of the horses!!)

Well, we've settled since our adventurous (is that a word?) trip here.  You may notice I haven't mentioned golf since we've been down here.  Ken again wrenched his back before we left...pretty bad this time and I'm starting to think it might be time for another MRI.  But, in the meantime, he needs time to heel and tends to be stubborn, not asking for help!  Have to watch him all the time.

These sunrise pictures show what we have forecasted for as far as the forecast is forecasted!  Temps in the 70's and sunshine...who could ask for more!!!

.......We're now a couple of weeks into our stay here at Lakewood.  The weather has continued to welcome us throughout the daylight hours, remaining in the 60's with bright, sunshine.  However, as soon as the sun sets (which is now earlier than EVER with daylight saving time) you need to move yourself indoors quickly!!

We FINALLY got to celebrate Susan's 60th birthday on November 11th (and, Happy 65th Birthday, Bev...we love you and wish you could have been here too)!  It's a pain that Susan's the last one and we have to wait sooooo long before she joins us all at 60 (or, for some of us, over 60!!)

We enjoyed the night with an Italian dinner at Villa Romana, the "2009 Best Italian Restaurant on the Grand Strand".  We have visited this restaurant every trip to Myrtle Beach and the food is great (although I have finished every bite of every course which says a lot to you BIG eaters out there!!!); however the atmosphere is getting a bit dated...we had to swap chairs with other available tables in order to find one we felt we could make it through the meal without falling to the floor!!!  And then there was the accordian player who serenaded Susan for her birthday...can you imagine being in your 40's and making a living on tips for your accordian playing?????  Anyway, we "welcome" Susan to the group!!!

We also followed another Myrtle Beach tradition and enjoyed a matinee (we were almost the youngest people there!!) at the Alabama Theater to enjoy the Christmas Show (our night driving leaves something to be desired).  It was really great when the "pre-show" comedian said that this was a "Christmas" show...we would be listening to songs to honor Christianity and the birth of Jesus and if you were offended by this...

well, we JUST DON'T CARE!!  I have to say, it gave me goosebumps to hear some of our very cherished Christmas songs sung loudly with feeling and not caring whose toes we might be stepping on.  I know it's time for more of this...time for the silent majority to be HEARD!!!!

Later, we enjoyed dinner at Yamato at Broadway at the Beach where Joey entertained us with his lightening fast "knife-play" and wit.  Joey is from Laos but came to the States when he was 12 and has traveled extensively before settling in Myrtle Beach for the last 3 years...he loves the ocean and the fast life of Myrtle Beach!!  (If there is a "fast life" in Myrtle Beach, we're not up long enough at night to see it!)\

Remember when we visited La Belle Amie Vineyard for the Wine Festival and we invited ourselves back to "Winestock"...the weather was warmer and the venue the best.  The Paul Grimshaw Band didn't disappoint.  We brought Susan and Bob along and enjoyed a warm afternoon remembering the past!!!

Next stop before Thanksgiving was a tribute to the Broadway show "Nunsense" and "Nutcrackers" with a stop at "Nuncrackers" at the Palace Theater. I have to say I felt like I was watching a high school production, but it did bring a laugh or two...

We celebrated yet another Thanksgiving at Thoroughbreds Restaurant....and what a way celebrate our third year here.  First year...WOW!!!  Second year, Okay....what happened to last year?  And this year...YAY...back to the raves of year one; maybe even louder and better.  The food was delicious (except for desserts...where is MOM at these things!!!  Well, we walked away full and happy...isn't that what it's all about?

And then, what is Myrtle Beach without a stop at "whatever" Calabash.  This time we visited Benjamin's Calabash...the same one visited with Alice and Walt and Kelley and Jack how many years ago???? You know, I have to admit...the only thing I can rave about at this buffet is the coconut, pecan, raisin cookies (which I snagged a half a dozen of in my pocketbook) and that says quite a bit when you consider the price tag at the end of the night!!

The night before Susan and Bob left (and now realizing the second night before we left) we went to Brentwood Gardens "Night of a Thousand Candles".  We almost called it before it happened (the temp had dropped and the thought of going out in the cold...not to mention having to walk with Ken's bad back...) But, we didn't cave in...after all, we paid $10 for the tickets...WOW thank goodness we didn't...what a wonderful night...a high school choir and show band to "beat the band" (where were the programs to allow our kids to shine like this) and then a walk through "wonderland"...what a spectacular night....highly recommended for those coming to Murrell's Inlet this time of year!!!

Now the moment of truth...I don't know if it's because Susan and Bob have left or what, but I have become very homesick and we're heading home a bit early to spend the holidays with the family.  Really looking forward to seeing everyone and we'll see you again soon!!
