Savannah, Georgia

Skidaway State Park
Savannah, Georgia

We had what felt like a race of a trip south.  Originally planned on leaving on a Saturday, thus not having to deal with New York weekday traffic.  Then the forecasts started to call for snow Friday and since we had just dug the Beave out of a couple of snow banks, we decided  to take off before we were snowed in for the winter!  It seems the snow followed us the entire way.  We would no sooner leave one place and we would hear about the large accumulations of snow the next day.

Our first destination after four days of traveling was Savannah, Georgia.  We've made reservations here at Skidaway Island State Park three times before and this is the first time we've actually made it.  It's a beautiful park with pull-thru sites so even though there were large trees and the hanging moss, we had no trouble maneuvering the Beave around.  We even had it "warm" enough the first night to sit outside with a campfire!

Ken was able to take a couple of the walking trails; most of these "swamps" are absolutely beautiful with hanging moss on what appears to be dead trees and of course plenty of the rivers that pop up everywhere.

We even managed to bundle up and take a trip to River Street with it's "sometimes a bit better than your average" souvenir shops and throngs of restaurants.  We had brunch at Huey's and sat at the window watching everyone go by in their hooded sweatshirts and gloves...I don't think too many people in Savannah own winter coats!!

After a couple of nights well below freezing, we decided to cut our stay short and head further south.  These weary bones need some warmth.  We've made reservations to return here in April...maybe we'll have better luck then!  We'll catch up again in Florida.
